FIELD DAY 2024 is June 22-23. all welcome to come by!
BVARS, along with the Terrace Amateur Radio Club, will be doing the annual continent-wide Field Day exercise June 22-23 at the Hiding Place campground about 4km north of Kispiox Village (up Kispiox Road from Hazelton). The idea is to practice setting up a fully functioning station in the field using no commercial power, portable antennas etc., and have fun contacting similar stations across North America. Main setup starts early Saturday, with official operating beginning 11:00 Saturday to 11:00 Sunday.
Drop out to see the action and get on the air!

In times of emergency when all other forms of communication are not available, the simple radio transceiver may be the only way of reaching out to others. If you recall the flooding that happened in southern Alberta, amateur radio was used to communicate with emergency air and ground crews as cell towers and land-lines were taken offline. In northern British Columbia, amateur radio can be a life-line for those traveling outside of cellular coverage. We operate under the auspices of Emergency Management BC (Emergency Radio Communications) and local government authorities (Town of Smithers, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, etc.), Through EMBC, Northwest Region, we are available to assist Search and Rescue groups, Emergency Social Services, other emergency response agencies, and non-government organizations when the need arises. We obtain funding from provincial Gaming Grants to help maintain our communications network, and we coordinate with other amateur radio groups as part of the Provincial Emergency Radio Communications Service (PERCS).
The BVARS maintains and operates a station housed by the Town of Smithers. It serves as the Emergency Operations Centre station, and is available for general use by BVARS members. including via the internet. It includes HF/VHF voice and email (WinLInk) capabilities, IRLP/EchoLink and APRS iGate.
When not in other use, the BVARS station functions as a Hybrid HF RMS station (VE7RBH) for (www.winlink.org) automated email messaging. See a presentation on the basics of the WinLink system here. A training video series on setting up a Winlink station and using the associated RMS Express email client software is available here.
Bulkley Valley Amateur Radio operators interested in participating in emergency preparedness should contact us via the BVARS email.
